Escritora británica nacida en Nueva Zelanda. Después de trasladarse a Inglaterra a la edad de 19 años, afianzó su reputación con la colección de cuentos Felicidad (1920). Alcanzó la cumbre de su carrera con la colección Fiesta en el jardín (1922). Sus delicados relatos, centrados en conflictos psicológicos, están escritos en una prosa de estilo inconfundible y de resonancias poéticas que delatan la influencia de Anton Chéjov. Los últimos cinco años de su vida se vieron ensombrecidos por la tuberculosis, la que le llevó a la muerte a los 34 años.
